Coconut cups or "ipu kava", were used in Pacific cultures including Tongan culture, during significant ceremonial and social gatherings, with kava being prepared in a larger wooden bowl called a "kumete" and poured into the individual coconut shell cups, which were then passed around the group in order of social status.
